How do I make a PDF small enough to email?

Why is my scanned PDF so large?
Because a scan is really a stack of photographs, and photographs are heavy — a text document of the same length is a fraction of the size. Compressing re-renders those page images at a lower resolution and quality, which is why scans shrink the most.
Will the text still be selectable afterwards?
No — pages are re-rendered as images, so the result is a flat PDF that looks right and opens anywhere but has no selectable text layer. If you need the words, run the original through PDF to Text first and keep that alongside.
